I didn't need a holiday to cook for I would do it anytime I got the notion. I remember (here she goes again) when I was a young child (a several of decades ago) when we lived on the farm and during planting and harvesting time Mom had to cook for the hired hands.
I remember the beef stews, fried chicken the mashed potatoes and side dishes and the pies or cakes she would make. She would set up the big table we had that would seat 8 and it would be full of her great cooking and iced tea and cold milk. Sometimes she would make homemade bread, biscuits or cornbread. No one left my Mommas table hungry. we always had plenty to eat since we lived on a farm and had lots of things to eat.
But let me tell you a story about a little grill and the kitchen table. Mommas kitchen table was one that you could take the leaves out of or add to make it bigger. It was a table with the pedestal in the middle. If you didn't keep the pedestal IN the middle it would get off balance. Well after one of Moms great meals for the hired hands she left the dishes on the table before washing, still stacked up, and this little 4 year-old decided to lean on the table. She not only leaned but she lifted her feet off the floor and the table went up in the air, dumping all the dishes off on the floor but one, a small cereal bowl that was already cracked. We had to go buy dishes so we could eat supper, yes I broke every one. ( and I didn't even get a spanking.)
